Causes of Postpartum Hair Loss

Postpartum hair loss is a transient condition affecting numerous women after childbirth. Throughout pregnancy, elevated oestrogen levels nourish both you and your baby. This hormone shift prolongs the hair's growth phase, resulting in luxurious, voluminous locks with minimal shedding. Nevertheless, after delivery, the swift decline in systemic oestrogen triggers a mass movement of hair into the shedding phase (telogen), resulting in widespread hair loss.

Normally, 5-10% of our hairs are in the telogen phase, allowing for a daily loss of 50-200 hair strands. In telogen gravidarum, up to 25% of hairs rapidly shift into the telogen phase, causing the drastic hair shedding. This shedding that may persist for several months.

Timeline of Postpartum Hair Loss

Postpartum hair loss typically begins around three to six months after childbirth. This delay arises due to the disrupted hair growth cycle during pregnancy, causing a postponement of the shedding phase. The duration and intensity of postpartum hair loss vary individually but commonly resolve within six to nine months postpartum.
