Tips to Avoid Dry Skin this Winter

Introduction

Winter presents distinct challenges for our skin. The cold, dry air can deplete moisture, resulting in parched, uncomfortable skin that is susceptible to fine lines, wrinkles, and cracking. Dryness can cause the skin to flake and scale, particularly on the face, hands, and feet. Additionally, the colder climate may increase skin sensitivity to irritants such as wind and cold air, causing further redness and itchiness.

Adjusting Your Skincare Routine to Avoid Dry Skin this Winter

To protect and nourish your skin during the winter months, Dr. Danielle recommends the following five key changes to your skincare routine:

  • Choose a Gentle Cleanser Switch to a soft cleanser that thoroughly cleanses without stripping the skin of its natural moisture.

  • Introduce Serums Serums can help nourish the skin in the short term and improve moisture retention in the long term.

  • Use More Moisturising Products Choose a hyaluronic acid (HA) product with larger molecules to seal in hydration – the skincare equivalent of your winter coat! A product containing multiple HA molecule sizes can cover all bases. Dr. Danielle recommends Hyalavive by Synergie Skin. Click here to read more about HA in a recent Aesthetic Astute blog.

  • Sunscreen SPF is still essential during winter as the sun’s UV rays remain harmful year-round.

  • Hydrate with a Facial A facial that includes a cleansing peel, nourishing mask, and soothing balm will rejuvenate your skin, remove impurities, and improve elasticity.

Additional Tips for Winter Skincare

Reviewing your skincare routine is a great start, but there are several other steps you can take to improve the integrity of your skin:

  • Exfoliate Less Often Exfoliating once a week with a gentle scrub or wash is sufficient. Over-exfoliating can dry out your skin.

  • Don't Forget about Your Lips Use a non-comedogenic lip balm with SPF to keep your lips hydrated and protected from the harsh winter air.

  • Take Warm Showers and Baths Avoid hot showers and baths, as they can dry out your skin and exacerbate other conditions such as rosacea. Stick to warm water and limit your shower time to under five minutes. We understand how comforting a hot shower can be, especially in winter, but it's important to prioritise your skin's health. Maybe you could allow yourself another comforting treat to make up for giving up your hot showers?

  • Humidify Your Home Use a humidifier to add moisture to the air in your home, helping keep your skin hydrated.

  • See a Professional A doctor can assess your skin, listen to your concerns, and advise on the best products and treatments for your skin type.
